Resurrection Garden

We’ve been pretty busy around here and we haven’t had a lot of time to make any Easter crafts, but we did manage to find time to make this Resurrection Garden.  This is a great way to help your kids learn the Easter story!

My friend Liz, from The Farmwife Cooks told me about this fun craft and I immediately knew I wanted to make it with my Religious Ed class.  Mel, our oldest is in the class and I didn’t want to leave B and Jo out, so we made one at home also.  Plus, I wanted to make sure it would all work out and how messy it would be.  I think the director of Religious Ed is learning pretty quick that I can come up with some pretty messy ideas;), but I’m having a blast and the kids are too, or at least I think they are.

While this craft looks kind of difficult, it was easy to make and we had it together in minutes.

Ressurection Garden

For this craft you will need:


Terra Cotta plant saucer (any size will work.  we used an 8 inch, I believe.  Whatever size you use, just make sure everything else is uniform in size.)

Small Terra Cotta pot

large rock

small rocks

potting soil (we used Miracle Grow)

grass seed

small twigs

hot glue

hot glue gun

water

Begin by placing the small pot in the middle of the saucer and put the big rock in front of it. This will be the tomb. We had to use two of the smaller pots to hold it in place while we got ready for the next step.Next, add the small rocks in front of the big rock and to the side of the small pot.

Now, add the dirt behind the small rocks and on top of the small pot to form a mound.  Pack the dirt down fairly well.  Make sure the dirt is somewhat wet, but not drenched.

Add the grass seed to the top of the dirt.  (Sorry, no pictures of this step because I had too many helpful hands:))  Once you are finished adding the grass seed, it doesn’t take very much, add a think layer of dirt over the seed.

Lastly, you just need to add the crosses.  Send the kids outdoors to find some twigs.  Cut them to the desired size and hot glue them together to form a cross.  When the hot glue is dry, stick them in the dirt.

We waited a couple days after planting to water our’s.  A gentle spray of water is best so the dirt doesn’t run off, although that is a great example of erosion!:)  Place the Ressurection Garden in a sunny and warm location, if possible and wait for the grass to grow.  It took ours about a week to begin to see the first blades of grass.

I am seriously in love with this craft and the message that it delivers!  I hope you enjoy making this with your kids!

Ingredients

• 1 Terra Cotta plant saucer I believe our's was 8 inches
• 1 small Terra Cotta pot
• large rock
• small rocks
• potting soil we used Miracle Grow
• grass seed
• small sticks
• hot glue
• hot glue gun

Instructions

• Place the small pot in the middle of the saucer and put the large rock in front of it.
• Add the small rocks in front of the pot and around the sides, halfway.
• Put dirt on the other half of the small pot and on top to form a mound.
• Sprinkle the grass seed over the dirt, then add a thin layer of additional dirt over the grass seed.
• Cut small twigs to desired lengths then hot glue together to form three crosses.
• Once dry, place in the dirt.
• Place in a sunny, warm location and water as needed.
